Getting Your Child In Shape: Fitness

May 25, 2013 By Gizli Leave a Comment

In this country, childhood obesity is a growing problem. We know what the problems are, but it’s hard for us to start dealing with them. That’s why we need to take the time to help our children start living more fit lives. As their parents, it’s our responsibility. If you want to help your child get more active, use the following tips.

Be a good role model. This is fairly self-explanatory. When you’re a good role model, you’re someone that your child looks up to and emulates. If you spend all day lazing around, so will your child. Show your child that a full life involves action and being fit by doing it yourself, not by merely telling.

Put your child into a sport. Sports can be a great way for your kids to learn about teams, and they are a great way to keep active. Not only that, but kids who play sports are usually more suited for CEO positions when they get jobs. With all those positives, why wouldn’t you want your child to be into sports!

Help your child to be healthy. Instead of approaching it from a perspective of not being able to eat things that taste sugary and delicious, approach it from a different angle. Help your child understand that food is fuel for our bodies, and while something might taste good, it could be very bad for our bodies. Involve them in making meals and that will help them to be more appreciative of the healthy foods you want to feed them.

Take your child on walks. This can be a wonderful way to explore nature and to get out of the house. It doesn’t have to feel like exercise, even though it is. You can go on scavenger hunts, or try to find exotic creatures; anything, as long as it’s fun!

Go to the park with your kids. This is another way to spend time outside of the house, but you can race with your kids, you can play all kinds of games out in the open space. Try playing catch or basketball, or just run around playing tag with them.

Encourage your child to set fitness goals. They don’t have to necessarily worry too much about losing weight per se, but they can make a commitment to do more walking, or to spend less time in front of the computer. This can be a great way for you to guide them toward certain goals, while monitoring them for their own ideas.

Lastly, don’t worry. Don’t push them so far that they don’t like being fit or eating right. Do it slowly, bit by bit, and they’ll respond. Just make sure you know that you’re doing the right thing and that adjustments can take time.

Now that you know how to get your child up and moving, it’s your responsibility to do it. Get your child off the couch and don’t let him or her become another obese child in this country. You can both get fit together. [Read More...]
