And just like that, Globodyne Corporation--the big media institution where the affluent suburbanite and the company's Vice President, Dick Harper, works--collapses in a grand scandal, Enron-style.
To make matters worse, in the worst possible time, Dick's stressed-out travel agent wife, Jane, decides to quit her job--and if this isn't enough--their savings are gone, and nothing can stop Dick and Jane's downward spiral.
Now, after a series of failed attempts to keep a job, the desperate and impoverished couple has only one method to stay afloat: to summon up the nerve and steal their way out of misery. However, are Dick and Jane cut out for a life of crime? Written by Nick Riganas. Jim Carrey has come a long way since his early days on In Living Color.
He tried hard for an Oscar nom, but always contended with winning Golden Globes. And for years now, he has basically been bouncing around dramas, comedies, and dramedies. So now, he has tackled a remake of a comedy no less , and the results as per the last few years, are mixed at best. Carrey is Dick, an employee at Globodyne read: Enron who is promoted just in time to help sail the company into oblivion on television. He tells his wife Jane Tea Leoni to leave her job only hours before hand, and upon returning stunning home, realizes that he may be in a bit of trouble.
As the months go on, the pair's assets slowly begin to dwindle, and hope for continued survival begins to evaporate. So with nothing left to do, they turn to life of petty crime and hope for the best. It is not an original concept at all, but Carrey and Leoni do a valiant job keeping this boat floating. While the film does have a few hilarious moments, the rest of it is bogged down by mere snicker-filled sequences or just scenes that are totally unfunny. It's not like these two actors are having any trouble being funny, it's that the material is not funny.
Judd Apatow did wonders with The Year-Old Virgin, but he fumbles here pretty hard with his writing partner Nicholas Stoller, who does not have nearly enough credits to his name.
A parody on what happened at Enron was inevitable, but this just seems lackluster and barely thought out. Subplots are brought in, but barely resolved, and the key storyline just feels very weak by the end.
It's not terrible, it just feels a tad bit incomplete. The sorry thing about the entire film is the fact that much of it just feels like an extended montage with little payoff. It is only ninety minutes long, so it feels like a lot was trimmed down or cut right out.
But the film suffers as a result. If it was longer, it undoubtedly could have had more potential for more funny moments, and as a whole, feel more complete. While Carrey and Leoni do their best, it's Leoni who gives a stronger performance. Yes, Carrey is right at home with his zany character, and totally overshadows Leoni in every single aspect. But he just lacks that integral element of human comedy here, that made him so famous in the first place. It's unfortunate, and makes me wonder if the old Carrey will ever return, or if we'll have to contend with semi-funny Carrey for the rest of his career.
Leoni is much better, and feels more in tune with what she's doing. Even more unfortunate is the wasted supporting cast does very little. Alec Baldwin as the sleazy CEO Jack McCallister is sparingly unfunny, as is Richard Jenkins as the right hand man Frank Bascombe, who spends most of the movie drunk and not doing anything besides setting up for the finale. The rest of the cast has little to no screen time, or are simply silly supporting characters that just feel like excess waste in the entire scheme of things.
For all of it's faults, the film is a worth while watch. As said, I did laugh at some of it. A bit of work on the screenplay would have benefited everyone here. Just do not go in expecting a comedy classic with Jim Carrey. If so, you will be sadly disappointed. Start your free trial. I don't know what it says about me that I thought this book was hilarious View 2 comments. Jul 14, Tracy St Claire rated it it was amazing. This one doesn't necessarily have literary merit, but it screams ha plenty in the social and subconscious themes it throws out. The s had it share of monsters-under-the-bed for little Americans reading Dick and Jane: the Russians and the "duck and cover" movies, Vietnam, Zodiac serial killer They see stories about kindergarteners being slaughtered in their classroom and movies and practice it at school as "lockdown", they hear people kidding about the zombie apocalypse and their parents tell them that is just a way of saying save stuff in case something really bad happens REALLY BAD happens??
Here comes Dick and Jane and Vampires. The book reviewers seem split on whether or not this is a book for kids. This is emphatically a book for kids. The book begins with the vampire hanging around the area. And other funny lines.
It is a humor book. At first they can't see the vampire, then only Sally can, then the kids can but not the parents or something. But then, the Mom can see the vampire! And it might be a big deal, but the family deals with it. Mom mends the vampire's cloak. The makes the kids matching cloaks.
This book is an important book for our new kids. Our kids know that there are bad things out there, and you can't hide those things from them. The best you can do is show that we have to live with them. Dick and Jane, the original, sucked at that. Dec 09, Luke rated it really liked it Shelves: favoritebooks. This has got to be one of the funniest, yet most perverted book ever if you have a dirty mind such as myself. I cannot see this as a very good book if it's supposed to be taken seriously, which is why I gave it only 4 stars.
I mean, really. A vampire who stalks Dick and Jane? And their mom actually lets the vampire play with them, even though he hides under Jane's bed and shows up hiding in the bushes and trees near where the kids are playing. Funny, yet slightly creepy. Dec 27, Jessica rated it really liked it Shelves: own , humor. Freaking hilarious, if you are familiar with the Dick and Jane books. The early sections are basically word-for-word and picture-for-picture with the originals, but there is a subtle hint of something awry: a bat in the distance, flying.
A grayish face peering out of the bushes. Vampire slowly draws closer to the children, until eventually they become friends. No, really. Every family should have a copy of Dick and Jane and Vampires. It will serve as nostalgia for parents and bring a little humor to the nail biting time of teaching young kids to start piecing together sentences Dec 04, Madeline rated it it was ok Shelves: crap-tastic , no-judgements.
This book exists. That is all. Jul 06, Angus McKeogh rated it it was ok. Just like the original books. But trying to cash in on the "classics with vampires or zombies" phenomenon. I was left unsure as to whom the target audience was meant to be. May 13, Danielle Delahunty rated it really liked it.
Very funny to the over 12 crowd, not so funny for the under 5 crowd. This book should be in the humor section only, and would make a great gift for that obnoxious friend who loves Stephenie Meyer books. Just, PLEASE make sure that obnoxious friend does not have kids under five, because it's not even funny to do that to an obnoxious vampire fiction fan. My three-year-old and I picked this up at the library in the children's section and I am blaming the "Children's Section" for wrongful Very funny to the over 12 crowd, not so funny for the under 5 crowd.
My three-year-old and I picked this up at the library in the children's section and I am blaming the "Children's Section" for wrongfully providing an atmosphere in which it seemed okay for me to show my kid this book that is obviously completely inappropriate for his age, and in which he became terror stricken upon reading a few cursory pages of.
Mostly I say this because the alternative scenario is that I am a bad mother because I thought my own good nature could help a child of three overcome the fear of the supernatural white-faced antagonist who lives under the bed because he is lonely. This book is now banned from my house by the three-year-old and we are never to mention it again.
So of course I took snap shots of the book and promptly put them on Facebook in order to warn of the dangers of ever thinking it is okay in any fashion to show this book to a child! Just kidding, it's because I found the whole situation one of the times where I have the brave face to my child and laugh ridiculously behind his back.
Seriously, don't. Nope, that was more joking. DO buy it for childless Meyers fans. They will love it. It is hilarious.
